Kickoff

I’m so excited that Auburn University is ranked high in the football polls this year. My family has a long history of attending school there and being a little rabid about football games. My husband and I and lots of my other relatives graduated from Auburn. My granddad majored in agriculture there back in the 1920s, when it was still Alabama Polytechnic Institute. My favorite coffee mug is an Auburn mug one of my cousins gave him. It’s so old that the orange and blue AU has completely faded from the front. There’s nothing left but the 1989 schedule on the back.

Now my cousin is the assistant athletic director in charge of ticketing at Auburn, but don’t ask me to get you tickets. I am far down on the list myself. He has six brothers and sisters.

I love to watch games and cheer for players who have special interest for me--like, they’re from my high school (which produced Terrell Owens; if you follow this link, warning, turn down volume on computer if you are at work, rap music) or they were on Two-A-Days, which was filmed here in Alabama. I’m also a sucker for the whole atmosphere of the game, the excitement in the air. I wrote an adult romance about football that made the rounds of editors last year, but they all rejected it. Several of them said they would have bought it if it weren’t about football. I actually knew before I wrote it that romance editors usually don’t buy sports books (except for Susan Elizabeth Phillips) but this was such a good idea (I thought) and I just didn’t want to believe nobody would buy my sports book. I am like that.

So. I’m stoked about the coming season and Auburn’s chances at the national championship, but I guess I’ll have to watch games this year for the games themselves, instead of milking them for sequel ideas.

Who are you for?

Edited to add: Okay, now I have become fascinated with the rap song on Terrell Owens' web site. If you listen to the words it becomes clear this is a song written expressly for him. I wonder if I should get a rap song.

I'm a young adult writer
Sometimes I pull an all-nighter
Just to get down the jokes
And lovey-dove for you folks
Another book in the works
So good in love that it hurts
Going through heaven and hell
To put that book on the shelf
I said I write, y'all
Go
Go
Go
Go
Go
Go
My name is Jennifer Echols
I write the kiss and the cackles
I write the laugh and the touch
I know you love it so much
Here's where I rap about hubris
And other writers I can diss
Mess up my beat and my meter
This ain't iambic pentameter
But I write, y'all
Go
Go
Go
Go
Go
Go
Go Jenny
My name ain't Jenny, fool
Go Jenny
Go back to rap school
Go Jenny
Stop writing rap, fool
Go Owens
He went to my school
It's like THAT.
